The Copenhagen Cool Factor

Copenhagen Fashion Week has evolved exponentially over the last two years and has captured the attention of the global fashion community as the largest fashion event in the Nordic Region. Giving the “French Girl Style” a run for her money, brands like Ganni, Saks Potts, and Stine Goya are becoming household names and forging the era that is the Scandi It-Girl.

Straying from the culture of other fashion week capitols that tread on the lines of unattainability and utopia, Copenhagen truly remains the most brilliantly colorful. As an attendee, I embraced the Danish uniform of the layered floral dress and a pair of sensible trainers. After all, my Scandinavian gals’ wardrobes are notably functional and laid-back due to the mode of primary city transportation – cycling.

Stay tuned to these Danish brands and do as the Danes do.

GESTUZ

Destined for the modern woman on the go, Gestuz designs deliver all the vibes, laid-back yet polished, minimal yet feminine. Founded by Sanne Sehested Nielson in 2008, the label has evolved from off-duty rock ‘n’ roll into a multifaceted enigma of elegant street style. Gestuz strives to reflect the complicated yet confident woman in all of us, no matter the setting.

 DESIGNERS REMIX

Poised and powerful best describes the woman who wears Designers Remix. Founded by Charlotte Eskildsen with her partner and CEO, Niels Eskildsen in 2002, the Danish brand is one for the effortlessly stylish among us. With a philosophy in mind to create forever items, these pieces born of a mixture of sharp, utilitarian silhouettes and softer, feminine basics will last in an everlasting wardrobe.

GANNI

Conquering Instagram with the widespread hashtag, #GanniGirls, Ganni will quickly become your daily outfit inspo. The company was born in 2000 by a local Copenhagen gallerist with the vision to create the perfect cashmere knit. Since 2009, husband-and-wife duo Nikolaj and Ditte Reffstrup took control of the brand and re-invented Scandinavian fashion by contemporizing their collections with diverse expression, charming aesthetics and loads of denim.

SAMSØE & SAMSØE

Sometimes subtlety is the best kind of sophistication and this brand exudes that with its chic minimalism. Samsøe & Samsøe dates back to 1993, when two brothers opened a small namesake jewelry shop in Copenhagen. In 2000, with new ownership it was turned into an international fashion house that focused on contemporary clothes, footwear and accessories. A nod to its Scandinavian heritage, the label is defined by a wearable aesthetic that combines the utilitarian energy of Copenhagen street style.

 STINE GOYA

“For me, colours are an inexhaustible source of inspiration; an almost raw material I love to develop further," says Stine Goya, who established her namesake brand in Copenhagen in 2006. This zeal for colours and archive prints are made evident in her designs, adapting every piece with a flair for the dramatic. A Goya outfit demands a kindred spirit to work it and an audience to bare witness.

 MUNTHE

Labeled a modern urban-bohemian, Munthe is a combination of the raw and deconstructed, paired with the refined and elegant. Established in 1994 by founder and creative director, Naja Munthe, the designs have stood the test of time due to its conception of free-spirited, artistic liberation. It is unique, it is festive, and it is to be loved.

 SAKS POTTS

Pushing boundaries since its launch in 2014, Catherine Saks and Barbara Potts have set their eyes on designing for the fun nonconformists. Their outerwear collections are not based on short-termed trends but work beautifully across seasons with their affinity for vibrant colours and a hint of the unusual. A Saks Potts selection is a standout-walking piece of art.

BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN

Best described as ageless, exclusive, and unexpected. The creative directors Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave founded this Copenhagen-based fashion house in 1999 with the idea to create for fashion-forward thinking women who want to have fun with their personal expression. Their ambitions have come to fruition: memorable prints, bold colours, and structured silhouettes.
